Celebrating our Mental Health at Work Allies
October 10, 2024World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10. This year’s theme set by the World Federation of Mental Health is workplace mental health. The theme highlights the importance of addressing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, for the benefit of people, organisations, and communities.
At MoneyGram Haas F1 Team, the Mental Health at Work Allies Scheme was created in 2023 to do just that. The aim of the Mental Health at Work Allies Scheme is to improve working lives through changing attitudes and behaviours around mental health.
What is a Mental Health Ally?
- Mental Health Allies are an internal network of trained individuals who can provide support, signposting and trusted conversations about mental health in the workplace
- Mental Health Allies sit throughout the organization giving everyone in the workplace the opportunity to talk openly about their mental health to a designated person, who is not their immediate line manager or HR.
- Mental Health Allies play an important role within an organization informing and role modelling language and behaviors around mental health to bring about change in the workplace.
- The workplace is well placed to notice changes in people’s mental health and the Allies are a great resource to signpost to, enabling people to take proactive steps to restore their mental health in the moment without referral or delay.
Allies have volunteered for this position as they are passionate at being able to support their colleagues. They have all undergone mandatory Mental Health Awareness training and additional ally training to help support colleagues.
MoneyGram Haas F1 Team has Allies at each of its US, UK and Italian HQs, both trackside and factory-based, and from a range of roles so everyone feels they have someone who they feel comfortable to speak to.
Allies’ availability can be easily identified by team members wearing the green ribbon badge, the international symbol for mental health awareness. They can be contacted to arrange to meet face-to-face via message, email or in person, with all communication remaining completely confidential.
Lyndsey Purchon, Race Team Logistics Coordinator, said: “After being a member of the Mental Health Allies for a year, I feel as a team, we are starting to make a difference with activities that we have undertaken and having a more visual presence. This will only improve, and I feel that more people will feel safe to be able to engage with us and we will be able to reduce the stigma that can be associated with mental health.”
Additional internal and external resources have been created to assist and guide team members which are easily found on the internal intranet, as well as being physically promoted within each factory in the US, UK and Italy. To encourage the conversation around mental health and wellbeing being commonplace, regular activities and events are hosted to bring colleagues together to destigmatize difficult topics.
